Sometimes a machine may start to act aridic, even after you have restarted (rebooted) several times. You are scratching your head as too why. Well, I have had interesting instances where I cannot get a machine to be stable, especially after a crash.
When these moments occur, I like to perform what we call a Cold Boot. If you are on a desktop, shutdown the machine and then pull the power cable. Press the power button on the machine a couple of times. This is allowing the capacitors in the hardware to discharge fully, allowing the machine to completely discharge. This can aid in clearing RAM as well and allow the system to boot more cleanly. NOTE: Your machine may light up and then shutdown, this is normal as the last of the power is discharged.
Once the machine is discharged, you can choose to wait about 30 seconds to allow the hardware to further cool. Once this is done, make sure the power switch on the power supply unit (PSU) is turned off before plugging in the power cable. Plug it in, turn the power supply on and then power on the machine.
You have not performed a cold boot and hopefully this will solve any instability issues you may have.
As always, stay nerdy…
